Purpose

The Virtual Librarian (VL) is a mobile application which offers interactive, self-guided tours of the Library at Virginia Tech.

It acquaints campus visitors and new students with key library locations while engaging users via informational videos, quiz questions, and photo challenges.

Usage Research and Analysis

Collected usage data using surveys, interviews, field visits, and observations of work practice on how users interact with the current service.

Next, created raw work activity notes from the user’s perspective.

Finally, organized the data by sorting it into a Work Activity Affinity Diagram and Preliminary Flow Model.

Usage Research Data Modeling

Modelled usage data using the following:

1. Flow model: represents the interaction between agents and the system, and general tasks performed by them.

2. Work roles model: represents the types of users of the system and the relationship that a user has with the system.

3. User personas: represents some of the work roles and specific use cases.

4. Hierarchical task interaction model: represents the actions taken by the users when using the system.

5. Usage scenarios: to describe a narrative on how the interaction between users and the current system takes place.

6. Physical model: provides a location for our observations.
